isk-daemon has just been released as opensource (GPL) in the hope that this will drive its adoption further.

Recommendation algorithms available:

• By tag frequency for photo contributions of each user: what the system does is score each other user on the database based on the number of tags you have in common. Each user is represented internally as a sparse vector with tags as dimensions, where the value on each of these dimensions equal the number of Flickr contributed photos that contain that tag. A vector product is then made with each other user in order to find the most similar one. Several different metrics may be used to tell how similar each user is.

We have around 1.8mi user-tag tuples on the database so a recommendation takes about 6 seconds, which is really not good since server CPU usage stays at 100% during this time. This is going to improve soon as I work around better indexing and scoring techniques.

Completely hidden from users is an A/B test for determining recommendation algorithm variants that work better. Feedback provided by users are stored together with parameters chosen randomly for each generated recommendation.

Work on isk-daemon has fallen behind initial schedule but a major update (0.6) is on the works (due in 3 weeks), including:

• isk-daemon instances cluster support
• visual search scope narrowed down by tags
• major bugs and memory leak fixes
• POX (POST+XML) API has been removed and will be no longer maintained
• improved web admin interface

It has actually been online for a few weeks already as I’ve ironed out some bugs and added new features.

Current features are: Searching for visually similar images within a given set of tags or from the entire database, which consists of roughly 25k images from the “interesting” pool.

The people are using internet phone to connect with the World Wide Web which is one of the latest telephone service. But, pbx is the big problem for these phones. I haven’t been able to implement anything and don’t plan on working on it until August 2007. Meanwhile, I’ll keep the wiki updated and open for contributions.

There has been major updates at the imgSeek II wiki site. The ones I’d like to mention are an initial sketch of the roadmap and some technical details of the current vision I have for the rewrite.

Regarding the roadmap, yes, it does seem an amazing amount of work for a single part-part-part-time developer and yes it’s going to change a lot in the near future. I plan on doing a second review soon rearranging some features which I believe are critical and should be on earlier releases.

Something else I want to do as soon as possible (after the first release) is to spread the word about this effort as much as possible (possible targets: eclipse developers newsgroups, people previously interested on imgSeek and user groups for similar solutions)

Needless to say: I need your help so this effort can gain more momentum and become something great !

Work on the server-side version of imgSeek (also known as isk-daemon) is going steady but even though the two next releases on the road-map are due this month of January, I believe they may only happen on the beginning of February.
